I realise this isn’t really your problem as such but I’m pretty sure you’ll have an opinion and be able to advise.
Our new users seem to have problems registering at the WordPress level. Are there simple WordPress plugins that might help?
Any other ideas?

I would personally always advocate trying to resolve what any problems might be. The basic WP registration process is very simple and straightforward. It’s main problem is that it will allow a of spam/bot users to sign up.
There are a few WP plugins available. Searching the WP plugin repository using ‘registration’ as a keyword will throw up a list.
But I am sorry to say that I have only ever tried one of the ones I found this morning (Theme My Login) so am unable to make a recommendation. Perhaps you could consider a basic membership plugin…
