Previously you could select how breadcrumbs were displayed, either nested or on a single line. I prefer a single line as does my whining mate paul4. Can we have that back please?

One of the major points about moving to themes and templates is that display options should now be set by the tags – not by hard coded options. The problem – I do appreciate – is that there is no documentation for these as yet but of you want to make this change let me know and I will tell you where and how.
Oh – why wait!
The template is the spHead.php
The tag is:
sp_BreadCrumbs('tagClass=spLeft spBreadCrumbs&tree=1', __sp('Home'));
Just change the ‘tree’ parameter from 1 to a zero.
I’m not much of a tree person either. It’s the first thing I straightened out with the theme I was messing with.

Heh, heh… Andy sounded like a infomercial.
😉
options in the admin bye bye… now args to template tags… yeah!
just take some getting used to…
Re Breadcrumbs….
The single line fix worked fine, as above, but I didn’t want the Home link to show at the start of the Breadcrumbs…
Changing spBreadCrumbs&tree=0′, __sp(‘Home’)); to spBreadCrumbs&tree=0′); in the sphead.php file worked fine, but I’m left with two arrow icons next to the forum name instead of one…..
How do I fix this?

Because it’s all a part of being theme and template driven.
But then to make changes like breadcrumbs, you have to go into the core template file and do it. This is not good for newbs or people who do not edit core files. The way you guys had it before (make changes in the admin panel) was perfect as it was ![]()
yes, just like wp theme… and not core… should be your theme (which might be a copy of ours) and it was far from perfect… the customization options were too limiting for the majority of users… you couldnt move elements around and tweak like you can with wp themes, for example… all forums essentially looked alike since they we all based on the same layout with a simple skin applied… now we have already seen some new fantastic layouts for the forum…
unfortunately, we knew the change to a theme would not appeal to all…
if you have never edited your wp theme, then you are among the lucky – or unlucky depending on your viewpoint…
I have yet to find a theme that does everything I want without customization – and I love having that ability…

Are you saying there should be a theme specific admin panel included with the default theme? Didn’t see it.
Just saying that theme specific or not, taking away the GUI from the admin is going to prevent so many people from being able to access any kinds of changes. Taking away a GUI and making people edit php is kind of like going backwards imho.
I understand what you are saying… but on the other hand, the layout with only skins was holding back so many people and ideas… you had to live with elements where they were… no creativity allowed… so much more freedom, customization and creativity allowed now…
you are free to move elements where you want… and display the forum data however you want… no way to do that with a simplistic layout and options for turning some elements on or off, but having to remain in fixed location… yes, you have to edit a file, but we had a whole bunch of folks editing core files now to get the layout the way they wanted…
keep in mind, for almost all the gui options you referred to, they mostly turned stuff on or off… or changed a number… everyones forum looked pretty much the same except for colors…
we know we cant please everyone on this… and we have been getting lots of complaints and requests for more freedoms – skins were to constrained… and just like how wp themes works, its a step forward in my opinion… we just need more than four themes for folks who are uncomfortable editing a file to choose from…

Understandable, and I sympathize with you for having to make the decision. But in the long run, it may hinder the brand overall. Afterall it is called Simple-Forum, not complicated-too-many-core-files-to-edit-now-css-is-actually-in-php-forum.
Perhaps a brilliant idea: maybe eventually offer a plugin that would allow the backend of the forum to once again be simple to configure…
