Hey Younes,

Currently the only info on child themes is this Blog Entry

It does however explain everything you should need to know.

Do ask if you have any further / specific questions!

I saw the page for the child theme but I still don’t see how to create it and where put it?

could you tell me how to do this please?

not sure how to say what the article does differently…

like all sp themes, it goes in your sp theme directory (by default its wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes

you have to create the directory for your child and then add in (ie create) the files you want in order to change the behavior of the parent…  They function nearly the same as a wp child theme…

if you prefer, you can make your own theme by copying one of ours:   https://simple-press.com/documentation/codex/themes/theme-basics/creating-a-theme/

just to be clear, that link I gave you and you posted back is not a child theme…  its on how to create a full blown sp theme…

I also created the child theme (wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/default child), then I copied the default theme directory in default child. Finally I modified the file sptheme by putting this:

Simple:Press Theme Title: Default child
Parent: default
Version: 1.2.9
Theme URI: https://simple-press.com
Description: The Simple:Press default theme featuring traditional forum layout with numerous color layout options
Author: Andy Staines, Steve Klasen and Brandon C
Author URI: https://simple-press.com/custom-simplepress-themes-for-every-need/
Stylesheet: my-child.css
Screenshot: spTheme.jpg
Simple:Press Versions: 5.5.1 and above

And now you have updated it to be a child theme, you can remove unnecessary / un-edited lines and files.

you would go to forum – themes – theme list and select to use your child theme now…

I find it in the theme list, but it does not work

1) I created a new folder (default child) in forum themes => wp-content / sp-resources / forum-themes / default child

2) I imported the directory structure of default in the default child folder

3) I changed sptheme.txt adding this content:

Simple:Press Theme Title: Default child
Parent: default
Version: 1.2.9
Theme URI: https://simple-press.com
Description: The Simple:Press default theme featuring traditional forum layout with numerous color layout options
Author: Andy Staines, Steve Klasen and Brandon C

Stylesheet: my-child.css

Simple:Press Versions: 5.5.1 and above

default-child-image.png

Is that this is the right procedure or not?

what does ‘does not work’ mean?  a few more details please…

in you spTheme.txt file you said the css file name is my-child.css… did you rename the original default css file to that??  the original default css file is actually php…

Hi, thanks for the reply.

OK i understand that the style file still dafault.php.

I suppose that i have to copy it and modify it to adjust it to the child theme. But do you know what kind of modification i have to do?

Thanks in advance.

Basically, as long as the spTheme.txt file is correct and the corresponding files are correctly named, you are done. If you have only made changes to the stylesheet for example (default.php) then keeping the folder structure you can remove everything else bar the files that have been changed.

Also, say you have only changed one line of code in the stylesheet, you can remove all other lines as it will be loaded over the top of the parent, and doesn’t need everything else.

are you asking about css changes or getting child functional?  assuming latter, delete the default.php file in your child theme and add a new file my-child.css and then add your custom css changes to it…  if other, please clarify…
