Is there an easy way to have different background colors for different user groups in the forum?

not sure exactly you want to change the background color of??  usergroups are not shown in the forum...  do you mean the background of the user area next to a post?  or the post itself?  or other?

The answer to the first two is yes...  a class is added to each post based on the usergroups they are in... so you could style based on that class...
