Wow – one of the oldest WP plugins and still going strong! It always was a good one,.

Thanks for the recommendation. Does this also prevent spam registration ? I am using recaptcha for user registration but still everyday 3-4 spambots manage to pass through it. Any way to curb that ?

Also I was looking for some plugin for ensuring my website is safe against potential hackers. Recently the databse of a major testprep company was comprimsed and credit card details, user login and passwords got stolen. Any recommendations for plugins for this ?

One of the strong points of Bad Behavior is it uses Project Honey Pot to look up each requestors IP thus blocking any access from an IP or otherwise flagged site. This is the link to register for a key: http://www.projecthoneypot.org/account_login.php

I assume any hackers would be blocked as well. But I’m just a hobbyist, and learn a little here and a little there.

As for WordPress most hacks could be because the site owner don’t have his wp-config.php locked down where a hacker could read the sites database and password. I have mine set to 400 Read for the owner only. Otherwise regular database dumps and backups are crucial.

Speaking of Backups. I use Backup Buddy. Another Great WP Plugin: http://pluginbuddy.com/backupbuddy

For those who have ssh access and a linux box I have script that does an rsync of public_html, mysqldump, creates a date stamped archive snapshot and check if any previous archives are older than 90 days old whereupon it deletes them.

It then sends me an email report.

The whole process takes less than 10 minutes and I have 6 WP installations on 5 subdomains. It all runs as a daily chron job and is an absolute dream to use.

I didn’t write it but tweaked it to suit, you can get it here:

We should maybe have a pinned topic for this sort of stuff, it is really good to know what others are using.

Conrad

we used to use backup buddy (and still do on some personal sites) but found a home grown script works best for our sp stuff…

I will take a look at adding a new forum for the sharing of plugins, ideas, and other stuff…

This seems like a very good idea. The problem with the wordpress.org forums is that you hardly get responses to your issues. Since Simple-press is a close knit community here, we’d like to help out each other and who knows what direction this may go into and what shape this idea may take! The fringe benefit of this would be that it’d bring more traffic to simple-press because people will come searching for wordpress related queries. I’ll soon do a review of Simple-press on wordpress site also.

hope so!

but have moved it to:  https://simple-press.com/support-forum/website-tips-and-tricks/

as the new name (suggested by BrandonC) was better than my original one!

Tips and Tricks, I’ve heard that somewhere before (WP eMember, WP eStore) but I like it. I bet we all learn plenty from the new forum.

Thank you have installed this plugin. Let’s hope it solves the problem of spam registrations.

This plugin looks good but it’s paid. Why would one want to pay $75 when the backup can be taken free of cost using plugins. This is what I use

Make sure it backs up the forum tables. Some don’t – they just backup the base Wp tables.
And does that also allow for a full site backup like PluginBuddy does?

Backing up other db tables other than WP is an optional setting in Backup Buddy. I felt it was worth the cost, but somehow missed that it was a subscription when i payed, which has since expired, so no more updates for me.

But BB saved my Ass when eBay launched a DdoS on my critic site www.ebaymotorssucks.com last July. Turned out the FBI was investigating the massive eBay VPP Fraud that i had been reporting on my site for more than 2 years beforehand. When eBay got wind of that invest, they DdoS my site offline to prevent the FBI from seeing my vast collection of EBM scams that went back to 2004.

Luckily i had done a full BB Backup the day before, and was able to migrate my site data to another domain in less than an hour. Backup buddy sure saved my ass then. And I’m a true believer of frequent full backups. Including a full FTP download of all my site content, and frequent database exports.

Ya never know when disaster will strike! eBay FU!

Okay, will check that and let you know. In the meantime ,Andy again if you see my post above, I tried to quote something else and the name of the plugin got quoted even though I used it with great caution after you had told me the last thing how to use it properly. I regularly participate on other forums which run on various forum software and it becomes very easy for a person to easy in the text editor what is getting quoted but it’s very very confusing here on simple-press. I would really really(and I mean really) request you to please take care of this. 🙂

Sorry –  you’ve lost me. What was the problem?
