In the last few days, spambots have been attacking my site and worthless comments are getting posted. Can anyone suggest what do I counter them.

As recommended by someone here, I have Bad Behavior installed but it doesn't seem to be helping.

And I wonder how come this problem has surfaced in the last couple of days itself.

Here's the link to one of the blogposts . You'll see all those crappy comments there. Should I install a captcha in the comment form  ?or is there any alternative ?

For the time being till I get a better solution, I have used Discussion->Settings and checked "User must be logged on to comment"  to prevent the onslaught

Aksimet works extremely well. If you are running our admin bar plugin, it uses Akismet to check for spam in forum posts too.

It's probably the best option. It's pretty easy to get an API key. It's an odd way they do it but it works.

Hey Andy & Steve,

I had installed Akismet on my site and though the spam comments have stopped. However, spam bots have started registering on my site heavily. There are hundreds of them registering everyday. I am using captcha in my registration form? Any suggestions on what can I do to stop these bots from registering. By the way, I am also using Bad Behavior plugin(that used project honeypot)

Registration is a site level operation and strictly controlled by WordPress. Akismet wont help with that although I am not sure if Bad Behaviour does - long time since I have tried it. There may be some other WP plugins that may help - I really don't know. Spam registrations are a bit of a way of life and in my own experience tend to come in waves.

We DO have the SP spam registration removal plugin which can help you clean them out periodically. We wrote that to keep our own sites clean!

I see. So the SP spam registration removal plugin would even delete the genuine users who haven't posted on the forums at all or have posted long back ?
