Permissions issue after upgrading

Hello,

We just upgraded to the 6.10.9 version and it appears some, if not all, of our members can no longer post to the forums. When they go into their profile and click on the permissions tab, the permissions match the “Read Only” permission set.

However based on their membership group the permissions are still correctly set to “Standard Access” which has the “Can start new topics in a forum” as well as other permissions that the Read Only group denies.

I checked, double checked and triple checked our forums groups and permissions and everything is set correctly. I haven’t made any changes in those areas of the forum in years.

I am convinced that the upgrade to the 6.10.9 version caused this issue. The only other change I made recently was disabling the Captcha simple press forums plugin. I tried re-enabling that plugin which did nothing to resolve the permissions issue as I expected.

I also tried all of the cleanup, rebuild and flush cache options in the housekeeping. None of which resolved the permissions issue.

Please help!

After further review, it appears that many of our members lost their "Members" user group association and are now in the "No Membership" or "Members Not Belonging To Any Usergroup" limbo status.

I tried assigning one such user back into the "Members" user group from the "Manage User Groups" page and it did not show any error, but when we refreshed the user's view or checked the user status in the admin, they still have no user group association.

It appears this happened after the last upgrade.

Please help and let me know how to get those associations returned to our users!

Thank you so much.

Hi Jafar,

I'm sorry about the issues you are having with permissions.

Do you remember what version you were using previously? It it possible for you to roll back to a previous version until the issue is fixed?

Do you have any errors in your PHP error log? You write that this affected many members - do the affected members have something in common that the unaffected members don't have?

I'll look into the issue, but it could take some time since we haven't seen the issue before and the latest few updates should have had nothing to do with permissions.

Hi Marcus,

Thank you for the reply! No I don't remember what version it was, but we last updated our plugins on 6/18/24, so whatever version was latest at that point is what we were previously running.

I am open to trying to revert to a previous plugin if you don't forsee that causing any issues.

However, I am perhaps unconvienced that it will resolve the main issue at hand, which is moving all users that are not assigned a user group back into our "Members" user group. Since the users are ungrouped as of the last update, i am unconvinced that running the old version will re-group them automatically. Please confirm that.

So at this point what I really want to do is just get those ungrouped users back into their grouping again. If you have an SQL script to regroup them ungrouped users, I am comfortable to do that also, if that's faster than troubleshooting this issue in the meantime.

When I try to move an unassigned user from the "User Groups" page to the Members group, it says that it moved the user successfully. But then when I look again, the user is still unassigned. What's more, under "Event Logger > View Log" there is no entry for assigning the user to the user group. I am actually not sure if it would appear there anyway, but I thought I'd mention that.

Here are the latest error log entries. I hope they give you a clue why the issue is happening that we can't move user to a new group.

I agree, if you upgraded from a recent version I don't think it will help to revert to that version.

I have not been able to reproduce the error, but from the log it looks like the error when adding users to groups is related to the webserver Apache.

If you could create a temporary admin account and send the credentials to support@simple-press.com, then I could have a look at the issue on your site.
