There must be a feature where a automated welcome message is sent to users who have logged for the 1st time via PM...or does this already exist ?

no, there is not such a feature.  but it would be pretty easy to add if you can handle a bit of php.  when 5.0 comes out it will be a very simple plugin to be written.  and before too long, we will be looking for volunteers to write some plugins to test out our plugin api in development...
