Just a thought, but a backup plugin would be nice. Example, 3 buttons in the Simple Press Administration- "backup db" and "Backup wp-content" and "Download backup directly"

I would see this as a WP site-wide item not specifically SP. And there are some good backup plugins already available.

You are right, but a feature to export / import all settings could be useful to have, just a thought.

You can't really divorce the SP db data from WP db data. SP does not exist in it's own partition. It is, for example, totally dependent upon WP user related data. So exporting/importing really has to be at the entire database level.

So it will never be possible to export and import the forum database (mainly the posts)?

Here's a sample use case: Say I move my website from one domain name to another and I have trouble copying the entire WordPress database and configuring it for the new url. The developers of Simple:Press will never be able to create a core feature or plugin that would allow me to export the posts from the old site and import them to the new one? I'm just out of luck? It's actually easier to import posts from another forum platform?

Not at all. Plenty of users have moved their forums from one domain to another. What I said was that being dependent upon certain WP data you can't just export the forum tables and expect them to work somewhere else.

SP is not a forum platform. It is a WordPress plugin. It integrates with a WordPress site, That is it's whole point.

as Andy says, most forum data like posts is uniquely tied to the wp user db... grabbing that data without a bunch of wp data would not be much use...  moving forum, topics and posts without the underlying wp user data would be problematic...

I was having trouble moving and reconfiguring the database for my website while moving to a new domain name, but fortunately I was able to figure it out and retained all of my forum data.

It'd be nice if there was some sort of import/export feature though. WordPress has an import plugin that enables you to import users, posts, and so forth. Can't Simple:Press have something like that? Used in conjunction, the two import plugins would provide another way to move your forum data for those who have limited PHPMyAdmin skills.

I realize that Simple:Press data is tied to WordPress users in the WP database, but a couple of times now while restoring a database I've had one or two users go missing and their posts put in the trash. Why one or two users who only have one or two posts got deleted those times, I don't know. But I was able to recreate the user accounts and restore the trashed posts. Before doing that I noticed that Simple:Press had reassigned their posts to a named guest. That seems like a good backup plan to program into an import plugin.

What would be a better solution would be to look at current export/import plugins that are available and see if one of those can be extended to include forum specific tables if that is not happening already.

I am not against the idea of creating an export/import function for SP as such but it is as fraught with potential user issues as not doing so. SP is only a WP plugin and as such I still believe that export/import should be at site level. If SP data was encapsulated entirely within it's own tables then I would be 100% for doing this but this is not the case

also worth mentioning that simple press posts are not put in the trash... and cannot be restored short of entering the data manually again... so are you sure we are talking about forum posts here?
