I think it would be a good feature to have somewhere to allow members to delete their account if they choose to do so. Is there currently a way for members to delete their account that I have missed somewhere? I know members can be given permission to delete they're own posts and admin can delete an account, haven't actually tried to see what would happen to members posts though if an account was deleted.

since users are the realm of WP, it would have to be something that WP allows which it does not by default. And rather than recreate the wheel, I would suggest looking at existing wp plugins that do this such as:

and if an sp admin deletes an account from within the SP admin, all posts are retained and the posts are changed to be from a guest with the old users name. We have an open ticket to offer more options and control on what to do with posts (ie reassign, remove, etc) when deleting a user... No ETA on the ticket though...
