Hi Andy et all,
It's me again, just a quick suggestion:
--On the upload avatar Profile page, it would help to auto-create a thumbnail image with determined size (set in the forum backend) --> this is similar to the WordPress thumbnail image creation [Image Can Not Be Found].
--Practical Reason: this will allow users to upload image at various dimensions (and of course, by default the script should limit the size to ~30K =).
sorry, not following what you mean by the first suggestion. you want a thumbnail of an avatar which by their nature are already thumbnail size or smaller? are you wanting large pictures there vs avatars? large images will likely play havoc with the front end display.
In the upcoming v4.1, if all goes according to plan, we will be adding a user photo image to the profile in addition to the avatar. The profile photo would only be displayed in the profile. the profile in general is getting a major overhaul.
Also, you can already set the max avatar width/problem-with-post-edit-buttoneight. In 4.1, we will be adding a new image uploader. If we change the profile avatar uploader to use it, which is under consideration, you will also get file size limits.

LOL.. What I mean is to let the user upload image at ANY dimension, but limit the file size to the one set on the backend. As currently, if I set the max width to 100px, users can't upload image if their image width is bigger than the max.
Thus, I think it would be more 'user-friendly' if we limit the max file upload size instead of the image dimension.
Of course, because of we should 'normalize' the size of the displayed avatar in the forum, there should be an option on the backend to set the width and/or height of the Forum Avatar Image.
Another way is to auto-create a copied thumbnail of the original image that have the same Width and/or Height, as set in the backend for the Forum Avatar.(The reason for the thumbnail creation is because the original image may have large dimension and, thus, not only reduces the quality of the resize image but also increase the total KB size of the web page =).
