I have been using the Simple Forum for a week now and at the same time I was writing down what I thought is missing.
This is the list I came up with:
1) Private Messaging panel could also show the time when the message arrived (mm:ss). Right now it only shows the date.
2) Private Messaging#2: Would be nice if we could quickly look up the profile of the person who wrote the message (pop up or link to profile page).
3) The 'New/Recent posts panel' could be also visible when a user is logged in (could be an option)
4) Profile pages... [Image Can Not Be Found] I read that you are already implementing profile pages. What will happen to pop-ups?
5) *optional* Increase loading performance - Forum has like 130 queries... But I am not a coder, so I don't know.. Is that a big number?

we have an overhaul of the pms on our list. not sure how much gets into 4.1 though as its nearing the end of development.
The new/recent posts panel exists primarily for users as is. of course, it shows unread posts as the title says. have you checked the options and enabled it??
4.1 includes a bunch of performance enhancements including significant improvements in db queries.

Yes I have it enabled, but it appears only for guests...
Options >>> Forums >>> Forum View Formatting
"Display recent Posts on Front Page" is checked.
"Number of Recent Posts to Display" is set to "6".
"Display Recent Posts Above Groups" is disabled.

keep in mind that its unread, recent posts... so if you have already visited the forum and seen the topics, they are read and will not be displayed again... for guests, the latest X number posts are always unread...
if you simply want to display the latest posts, regardless of unread, check out the template tags...
