frankly, its not all that hard... just no one has taken to doing it... the biggest issue is phpbb has its own user db vs wp... Several version back, I wrote three importers for other wp forum plugins... they are now a bit out of date, but an example of one is located on our wiki for anyone to use as a reference.
unfortunately, Andy and I are a two man team and just havent found the time to write an importer yet. we would love to add some additional folks to the team and help work on issues such as importers, but we havent had any offers 
we still hope to do it one day, but we are still getting more feature requests than import request. we want to do it all and please everyone, but just dont have the time...
anyone want to take this task on?

Anyone know how to convert from phpBB to SP manually, without a converter? I don't mind doing some work, even in mySQL, but I'm not a developer ...
Has anyone done this via any means?

I know good service to convert 64 different Forum or CMS from/to Simple:Press, here is that gConverter

rather pricey and oddly charges extra for more posts though its certainly script based...
and it does not list simple:Press as a forum it converts too...

I don't think so, I just talked with them via live support and asked about Simple:Press, yes they do, anything to Simple:Press and Simple:Press to anything.
BTW they are using Simple:Press for community look: http://gconverter.com/forum/

I converted my phpBB Users, categories, forums, topics, posts and attachments to Simple:Press a few days ago, I simply asked gConverter team to do that, only 24 hours and things were done :), they have converted lots of forums to Simple:Press, just check their portfolio.
