There are some template tags that you can use that might accomplish what you need. http://wiki.simple-press.com/p.....late-tags/ In particular.. the Unread PM's one that tells you how many unread PMs are in your inbox.

sf_pm_tag  I use that in my site and it seems to work well.

It's ironic I was involved in a thread in the multisite part of this forum just today about that tag 🙂
