I think PM's could be a little more obvious for users, a pop-up window that displays they have a message would be great.

really? would be quite annoying to me... but have made a note of it...
and btw, if you know some php coding, you could add this too and share it with the community...

There is also a template tag available for use that could be placed in a sidebar or home page - anywhere away from the forum - that can show a user if they have new PMs.

I´d also prefer an Option for Popup. For my needs it would be even besster to have it on this "BuddyPress Noitification" display
(where the "0" is).
I recognized, that I´m always missing PMs and "find" them then some days later :/
E-Mail Notification does annoy me, for I get so many Mails from my page already.
Perhapst you can consider it...

new pm's are already part of buddypress notifications as you mention... assuming you have enabled them....

Hmm. As you see the Notifications of BP are enabled, but I do not get them without clicking the BP Menu Toolbar and then ->Forum. In BP I can only activete ore deactivate the Notification, is there a additional Option in SP I didn´t find?

Maybe I am not understanding what you want to happen.... Can you elaborate? Please keep in mind we are not buddypress users... Just enough to do the integration plugin...
I am saying the number of unread PMs are shown in the buddybar or admin bar next to the link to inbox...

ah, now that I am actually home, I can see what you are referring too... yes, it should bubble up into that number and has in the past... must have gotten knocked somewhere - I know BP made significant changes to notifications so it might need a bit of an update...
will get a ticket open and figure it out...
