Support Forum
Hey guys, this forum has gotten me excited
as an idea, instead of having the karma type of system on most forums… why not be inovative and use the Digg.com and the Youtube.com type system…
where each comment/thread can have thumbs up or thumbs down. (e.g. http://www.jarinteractive.com/...../photoJAR/)
Each thumbsup can be considered a point anyway, so theres no need for a karma type thing.
If a thread gets 6 Thumbs down, there thread would be hidden … just like Digg.com ,.. it could put less pressure on the “report a post” feature… The entire forum could be maintained better by the community themselfs. Now my project is about a graphics forum, and each thread is like an entry of a design. So it would be really cool to allow people to rate each Thread (design)…
There may be problems involving multiple accounts and users rating there own threads with different accounts, so a cookie or ip function to only make them thumbs up or thumb down only ONCE…
this would really give this Forum script something many other forums dont have.
thanks alot
you alredy can rate posts... check the components admin panel, extensions tab... you have the option of ratings by 1-5 stars or by thumb up/down...
currently, the post ratings are shown on each post. In 4.1, I have also added in a summary rating at the topic level.
Also in 4.1, I have added the ability to enable/disable post ratings on a forum by forum basis vs the current all or nothing..

I havent been able to test it out,
I think you should make it, so if it gets less than 6 thumbs down, the post gets hidden… like on youtube. makes it more of a democratic forum etc etc..
Is it possible for the rating to be attached to the users records, so each thumbs down or vice versa can show up on each uersnames records, as a source of reputation? or is that already done?
regards,
sirwan.

currently, yes, its just a count... its a way for users to provide feedback on posts... in 4.1, time permitting, we are hoping to add some template tags for listing highest rated posts, etc...
boy, I would hate to have the hiding bit based on count be automatic... but maybe optional?? would that be for the post or the topic summary?
what other actions would you expect/desire? to my knowledge digg doesnt "take any action"...
I can add any good ideas to our wish list, but no promises on implementation timeframe - 4.1 features are filling up in a hurry and we aren't too far from a feature freeze on it.

I think what he may be saying is that if a post gets a certain number of down thumbs that it is hidden and maybe referred to the admins for review? That is what Craigslist.org does with self moderation - if the community feels a post is spam or inappropriate then a certain number of reports or flags triggers it to be removed. Of course, you could do that with the REPORT button as well.
Having a purpose for the thumbs would be great. Having an all-time favorite posts list would work. I know on our busy board people are really starting to ask 'why'. If there is no purpose, no one is going to use the feature.
BTW, favorable comments about us switching from phpBB to SPF for the CBS radio show board. Only up a few days and people are having fun with it!
Thanks for a great plugin!
actually, thought I remembered coding up those tags before so, just checked and the current version does include highest rated and most rated posts template tags - check the online help on how to use them.
yeah, I understood his comment on hiding, and do get it. My point was that making that the default action would probably be the wrong action. and since we rate posts, I questioned whether the action would be on the post itself or should be applied at the topic level. I would guess the post level, but that could cause confusion if one or some posts were hidden, yet others referred to them.

others could still refer to the post and it could still be seen, but what i mean by hidden is that, it is not visible until someone clicks “View this post”, than a jQuery script or something can reveal the hidden post with some sort of slight animation. so it'll still exist and is still seeable, but is hidden until someone decides to view it.
People often moan about why “my post was deleted by the admin” …. letting the users decide what is appropriate goes with the whole community vibe.
The point im trying to make is not only about hiding the innappropriate post, but that each thumbs down given to a post by all the users, will go on the record of the poster who posted the inappropriate post.... and vice versa if it was a good post. THIS WILL MAKE THE KARMA/REPUTATION SYSTEM the best thing ever to be on a forum.!!!!
ITS A ALL-IN-ONE SOLUTION to :-
- community moderating.
- Karma/Reputation of users.
- community interaction & democracy.
- can create top 10 users based on how many thumbs up they've got, this will give users a reason to comeback and interact.
PLEASE CREATE THIS!!

we already have an open ticket on implementing a karma system and to consider using the rating system as the basis... not sure yet if it will get into 4.1 or not...
lots to consider such as if the rating system is the stars and what if they users want karma but not post rating...

yeah i guess there is every angle to consider, in terms of where people can rate someone, good luck guys!
