I hope that SPF's later versions could accommodate WPMU. In that case, BuddyPress Group should allow its members to use SPF.
SPF works just fine with WPMU.

I'm already looking into the new documentation for BuddyPress.org and also at BP-Dev.org
no help yet for feature integration, but it will clearly be a seperate plugin from both BuddyPress and SPF to link the two.
I will suggest however the Group Blog plugin for buddypress. Since we are talking about WPMU, you can assign Groups to have their own blogs.
Since SPF is a blog plugin, each Group Blog can have their own Forums.
I'm currently working on how to notify the Activity deamon that the user has posted into a forum (globally) so that activity will show in the users timeline and on the main site timeline.

it does display a default avatar... assuming they got configured at install... do you have a wp-content/forum-avatars folder?
