Yes - we are still working on a 5.8 release which is vitally important for the future as it brings the code base up to date to take full advantage of what newer versions of php encourage. This should also make it easier for people to take over at some stage.
So this is our primary focus at the moment and we hope to be in a position to release that around the end of this year. Having that in place makes it easier to discuss options with third parties. So we remain very hopeful. But we will keep users informed of any progress nearer the time.

OfflineAny news on SP's future..... I am at a crossroads of converting another large forum from SMF to something WP based.... and I love SP (paid for an use). But I hope to not have to do a change over twice.

Afraid nothing new to report... Must admit, we had hoped to have good news to share by now, but its not the case... We are still working to find someone to pick it up... We are still targeting end of July for our "retirement"...
Trust us, it would break out hearts to not have a solution in place by then...

Will the 5.8 release be out before you guys retire from Simple Press? You were hoping for this release to be out by end of 2017.

Yeah, only Copper currently... we dont want any memberships extending beyond our retirement date in order to honor those commitments...
wow, were we really talking about 5.7 at the end of last year?? its still our intention to release it prior to retirement... its essentially done and ready - just needs more testing... in an ideal world, we would run a whole beta program... from the ground up, its an overhaul and restructure for performance and maintainability...
and its a major release... every plugin needs to update (already done) as part of the release... so just thinking about logistics... and frankly, worried about releasing so close to retirement should there be issues...
I can honestly say that we truly do not want to waste the time we spent on 5.7... we are currently targeting early June...

still working 5.8, but getting close to Aug... still debating what to do with it... think the current thinking is pop out a beta version here in next week or two... we believe its done and pretty heavily tested - at least core... more testing of the plugins would be needed before final release, hence the beta...
we have also blasted a news item to the dashboard about the upcoming retirement...
no good news to report on someone taking over simple press.. exploring alternate methods there too for getting the word into different venues...
know any developers looking to pick up some sw?

Here is a question for worst case scenario. Let's say you don't find anyone to take SP over. That's a possibility I would need to prepare for well in advance, since SP is a major part of my business.
So...if I had to find another forum software, is there a software you could recommend where I could import the entire SP forum into without a major tech nightmare?

many wp forum plugins in the past have had importers for simple press... unfortunately, I have not checked recently... but wp forum, bbpress and others have had importers... additionally, gconverters can import into many diff sw forums...
hopefully, we can make it a non issue and have someone pick it up...

OfflineAlthough this isn't pretty, every forum package out there seems to support conversion from BuddyPress, and BuddyPress does have a SimplePress importer, so you could go from SimplePress to BuddyPress to something else...
Sadly that I had to investigate and test that....
