I have been trying to get our bbPress forums designed to our liking (using CSS-Hero to help), and I don't think I can get it right without some serious PHP modification.
From my perusal of SP, it looks a lot more like what I would like to do, but am a little reluctant to throw away the bbPress stuff I have done so far. So, can I run BOTH SP and bbPress at the same time? And, will the free download give me enough sense of the full potential of SP (or is it a case of having to buy various themes / plugins to really see)?
Yes, you can absolutely run the two side by side... of course, posts in one wont be reflected in the other...
We also have an importer to pull in your bbpress forum into simple press...
The free download is fully functional and comes with a number of free themes (couple with the zip file and others available for download)... we also have additional themes and additional functionality via add on plugins available for modest purchase..
Any simple press theme is completely customizable via css changes or template file changes very similar to a wp theme...

The answer is a guarded yes.
vBulletin has an unusual and pretty non-standard database schema which makes it much harder to import using our more generic importer scripts. Our vBulletin script was actually written and contributed by a user some time ago. I can testify that since then some have had success with it but a few have had problems. Not ever having been a vBulletin user I surmise this is because of the DB oddities.
It is free to download (Store > Tools section) and try of course as is Simple:Press.
Alternatively there is a company (http://gconverter.com/) who, I believe, have converted vBulletin to Simple:Press for users on the past and, while we have no affiliation to them we have heard good things of their service.
