Hi. Nice software. Have reviewed a dozen others, but I'm most interested in this one because it seems highly customizable.

I am looking to have a stackoverflow type site where replies can be upvoted and replies with the highest vote are sorted to the top of the page. So I was wondering if the plugins can achieve that and if there is a showcase example of that somewhere?

Also, I saw a showcase site with post ratings but I couldn't see a way of sorting the posts so highest ratings are at the top. Is there an option for this?

Finally, is there an option to upvote a post rather than rating it (like in stack overflow)?

Thanks smile

yes, the rating plugin for simple press supports a rating method or a vote up/down method...  so that is already included...

but currently, their is not way to sort a topic by the posts rating... sorry, but its an interesting concept and can certainly see the use case... I will open a ticket for future consideration - its certainly possible - but afraid no ETA since its the first request...

Thank you for your response Mr Papa.

I just want to clarify please. Because Simplepress is really my number one choice by far and I really can't wait to start using it but these features are really import to my specific needs.

You said topics can be upvoted instead of the star rating? That's great! I see that now in the plug in description, my apologies. What about replies to topics, can they be upvoted too (and possibly sorted)?

Sorry for all the questions but: do upvotes effect rank or achievement (from those plugins)?

Sorting topics would be good because my forum will be a forum of ideas, with the most popular ideas most readily available to new viewers. I think sorting replies by upvote is the most important though. Because it allows users to read the best of what the topic has to offer without reading all the replies. Not sure if simplepress can do this but if it cant the I will post a request. Because this helps a forum become knowledge base, where old but good quality information is easily accessible (like in stack overflow).

Kind regards,

Danny

I see Mr Papa has opened a development ticket on the sorting request. So it will be discussed here for potential inclusion.

Thanks Yellow Sordfish.

When Mr Papa said he opened a ticked it was in regards to sorting topics by rating. But I was wondering about the other functions I mentioned:

-Upvote in replies?

-Sorting replies by upvote?

-Upvote effecting rank or achievement?

Can Simplepress do this?

Regards,

Danny

I suppose it depends on what you mean exactly by this term 'upvote'. The SP ratings plugin can either use a now traditional 'star' rating system or a thumbs up/down rating system. On the basis that using the thumbs up/down increases/decreases the total votes on a post then surely of they were sorted by this then that is what you were asking for?

If not what you were asking for - and what the ticket was opened for - then I must be mis-understanding something...

yes, you can up/down vote any post in a topic...  I opened a ticket for the sorting by the posts in a topic by the rating...  sorry, first time you asked about affecting rank, but no, they dont affect the forum rank...  but if you using the cubepoints or mycred plugin for wordpress and our companion plugin, the post ratings can be affect those...

Thank you Yellow Swordfish and Mr Papa.

Sorry I'm new to this and got confused between topics and posts.

So both topics and posts can have thumbs up/down but neither topics or posts can be sorted at this time. Thanks for the tips about integrating with the other Wordpress plugins. Didn't realise that was possible.

Well I think I'm pretty sold, will sign up when I figure out hosting :)

Maybe I will join in on the discussion for the ticket if I can find it.

Kind regards,

Danny

Ok then well I will share my humble thoughts on the subject here regarding sorting posts by upvote.

Pros: good for question and answer sites like stack exchange sites. It enables the best answers to move to the top of the topic so people can find the answer to the question they are looking for quickly. Consequently, the forum becomes a knowledge base, where anyone searching for the previous question can refer to that site and find the answer easily (without reading all the posts). There are a number of wordpress forum sites which specialize in this: SabaiDiscuss, CM answers, Q&A, Design wall etc.

To get an idea of the popularity of Q&A type sites maybe look at the views of these posts: http://meta.stackexchange.com/.....q=clones

If Simplepress could only have a way of sorting posts by upvote then it would have all the functionality of these Q&A sites and much more. It could draw clients that would otherwise sign up to those sites. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a plugin called "Q&A plugin" or something which would enable sorting and perhaps reputation based on upvote. That would also help market the Simplepress to people specifically looking for Q&A type sites.

Cons: Of course sorting by upvote mixes up the chronology of the discussion and isn't best for these type of forums.
