Support Forum
The only thing I managed to do was change the latest posts to link to a particular post, it took many attempts but I did it in the end. Now people can click straight into the poll we have on our site from the home page, which is great. No shortcode needed for that though. The problem I'm having with everything else is not knowing where to put the short code. I've copied and pasted it from your help page and tried it in various places in the widget but it never does what I want. I only started all this in June and I guess I have a lot to learn. Thanks for your help anyway
if you describe one that want to use and where we may be able to advise of course. Although to be fair this is not a support forum...

We'd like to use Forum Link on the side bar of our home page. I'm sure if I could see how one is done I'd be able to work it out then. Thanks.
Assuming your WordPress theme allows for widgets in the sidebar go to the widgets admin page, add a text widget to the sidebar where you want it and type:
[sp_forum_home_link]
save - and that should be enough.

Ohhhhhhh, I must be really stupid, the only widget I have is the recent forum posts. That's on the widgets page. That one works fine and is on the side bar. It was ready to go and didn't need anything changing. Its all the others on your list of widgets I can't work out, like Profile Link and Admin and Moderator Online. Yes I understand this isn't a support forum so thanks for your help. I think I'm a lost cause so giving up now xx
When you open the widgets admin page in wordpress there are a long list of standard widgets down the left hand side, One of them is called 'Text'. You drag this into the selected widget area over on the right hand side and simply enter the shortcode into it's entry box as directed.
Sorry - but it really doesn't get much easier than this!

Ahhhhhh, now it makes sense, I have widgets for various other things but no one told be I had to use the text widget. At least now I know where to add the shortcode 🙂 However, I've done it and the widget appears on the page with the right Title but with the the code showing underneath. Perhaps our version doesn't work with Simple Press widgets. Thanks for your time guys 🙂
I want to refer you back to post 10 of this topic... not so much becuase it mentions using a text widget, but because it also has a link to an article that explains how to update an older theme that might not be allowing shortcodes in text widgets....

Woo hoo.... all sorted. I updated as instructed (learning all the time) and once I realised the short code goes in the text widget everything works fine 🙂 Thanks for the help guys, I'm glad I didn't give up now 🙂
