I'm thinking about upgrading. Is membership a recurring monthly payment or is it a one time payment, which requires renew when the membership term expires?

Membership is a one-off payment that lasts for the duration selected when you join, We do not auto-renew when expiry comes around so it is up to users if they wish to continue with the benefits of membership.
