Is it possible to allow a user to create a password to a forum while they are creating it? Also is it possible for them to make a forum private and by email invite only?

   Thanks!

Hey Alex,

Yes it is possible to make a forum private, you can assign permissions to usergroups, and you can then make a forum in-accessible or accessible to usergroups of your choice.

There is currently no way of adding a password to a forum, however the permissions and usergroups should give you everything you need to segregate your forum the way you want, similar to the way we run access on this support site for members / guests.

Also unfortunately there is currently no invite email option, although I'm a bit confused by this one. Surely if a user want's to be part of a forum that they don't have access to, then they do not need to be invited, just allowed.. Although I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this helps

As Ike has said - using our built in access control features is the best way to go and far more flexible and secure than using a password.

On the email front there are various WordPress plugins that might be able to help with email handling. It sounds like you might consider some sort of membership plugin which may also have a possible feature you could utilise.

Thank you for the responses. I think I may be able to achieve what I need. Let me just explain in a bit more detail what exactly I need to do and then you can let me know if it is possible with Simple Press.

My website will be a paid membership site, once a user signs up for a membership I need them to be the administrator of a private/problem-with-post-edit-buttonidden group. Within this group I need the user to be able to do the following:

-Create other users that will have access to read and reply to posts

Each administrator should only have access to the topics he/she creates, I do not want them to be able to edit other groups.

  Is is doable?

couple things...

first, creating users is a WordPress thing, not a simple press thing... so as long as you have WP configured to allow them to create users, that can be handled...

second, need to check terms...  you want every member to run a hidden group?  do you mean user group?  a group is a collection of forums...  a user group is a collection of users...  the former group, does not have any permissions, so a hidden group itself doesnt make any sense...  you can have private/problem-with-post-edit-buttonidden forums as permissions apply to forums...  and if all forums in a group are not viewable, they wont be able to see the group either...

sounds like you do want groups... but this sounds like potentially frighteningly large number of groups and forums... the more you have, the more horsepower you will need to drive the site since its larger db queries...

third, you probably want these users to be moderators, not admins...  Admins have lots of power...  There is not a way to allow an admin with manage forums capability, for example, to only have it on one forum... thats not an admin...   you can however, make them a moderator which means they run the day to day activities of the forums they moderate... so yes, you can make them moderators on specific forums...  only drawback is that will be incumbent upon an admin to actual create the group/forum for the new user, since they wont be able to do it as moderator...  think admin as create and configure, and moderator as control...
