Possible to update from an old 4.4.5 installation?

A number of years ago a searched high and low for a forum to use with my WordPress site. No surprises, I discovered Simpe:Press, promptly installed and have enjoyed the forum for many many years without any issue. It really is fantastic.

Here's the thing-- I never updated. I'm running version 4.4.5 and am only just now having problems with the latest WordPress. That's right. The forum worked, I rarely needed to manage my plugins and updating Simple:Press just never occurred to me because everything was working fine. I'm only just now starting to have issues with the recent updates to WordPress. I came here for support for the first time and am stunned to find it requires a membership. That's cool, I can dig it, but I need to know for sure that I can update my extremely old version of Simple:Press without losing the (literally) thousands of posts already there. The latest updates explain how to update from installations that aren't as old as mine... gulp!

I realize this is almost definitely going to be problematic and support is going to be required. I'm also certain I'm not the only one running such an old installation issue-free and have come here to find that support requires payment. Thanks for this Pre-Membership Queries forum to ask such questions.

I nervously look forward to any kind of answer on this issue. Thanks!

We have no way of knowing. of course, how many users we still have on older pre-V5 versions but I doubt a week goes by when we don't hear from one who is upgrading. Just like this....

So the answer is yes - it can be done. The main problem is that you do need to be on at least version 4.5 to enable an upgrade to V5 (we are now at 5.4.2). So it means an interim upgrade to 4.5 and then a second hop to V5.

If you are now using WP 3.9 I can not say with any certainty that the mid-stage in there will work but it should if what you have now more or less works.

this Codex article gives you the instructions for moving from 4.5 to 5 - http://codex.simple-press.com/.....rsion-4-5/

And this one gives you download urls for any older versions you may need - http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-versions/

And finally - if of interest - this sets out to explain the financial aspect - https://simple-press.com/simpl.....-reloaded/

Hope that all helps

Hi, I need to upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.5.1 and then to v5.

I downloaded the 4.5.1 file from the link you gave above, but now I need an advise on how to use the zip file to upgrade without losing the content of the forum.

Thank you

Hi Yellow Swordfish, I've read all the pages in the Codex regarding the upgrade but I've not found the steps I need.

I found this: "If performing an upgrade from older versions to the latest one we recommend you ask about the steps required in the support forums."

Do I have to follow these steps to upgrade from 4.4 to 4.5?
