Hi there, thinking about using this. Starting a membership site (association) which will be a paid membership site. Also, which Wordpress theme do you suggest? Do almost any work with this plug in?

Most themes will work. The bottom line is that any WP theme that abides and implements the WordPress theme APi correctly will work. It is true that many do not but it is a small proportion of the thousands available.

We use WishList member on this site to control membership. It it helps there is a codex FAQ on how to set up SP, WP and WLM up to all work happily together.
