yeah, wasnt worried about the remove avatars.. just wanted to make sure you understood they could not be used anyways with your current priorities...
the problem is I just have not been able to duplicate this yet (think 2 of you have reported it in this thread)... I wanted to more testing this week specific to some of your settings but didnt get to spend as much time as I wanted...
I asked the OP if he could try a temp switch to the default wp theme to see if anything changed, but he never came back.. have you tried that?
so still trying to look into further...

the problem with switching to the default theme is it removes all my widgets and I have to spend time getting everything back the way it was.. I try to avoid putting myself in that situation so no, I haven't done that

that's why one needs a dev site backup of live sites... 
hoping to look at more tonight and see if I can see what is causing issues for you two users here and not more globally...

Tal, can you try something for me? Think I might know what is happening...
can you edit simple-press/sp-startup/sp-site-support-functions.php... find function sp_wp_avatar() and around line 302, right after:
include_once(SF_PLUGIN_DIR.'/forum/content/sp-common-view-functions.php');
can you add this line:
sp_forum_api_support();
and see if that gets it going...
