Image file are always difficult. We have been looking into using sprites and even possibly fonts. The main problem is that it makes it far more difficult for users to customise them. But we are still looking into it.
In my experience most browsers do a pretty good job of caching images without the need to intervene but it is possible, I guess, that this user had their browser cache screwed down tightly. Under those circumstances then yes - ensuring the images are cached makes good sense. What might have been interesting is if he had asked his own users who may not have had the same browser settings.
Does anyone want to add anything to this?

thanks for the reply. i was bouncing around in a bus trying to post with my phone which explains the funky typos but the link came through ok. we're getting a lot of complaints about page load speeds. some of it might be the classipress theme (which i'm finding out is HTML3 current and not very fast in its own right) but we believe some of it is SP related.
Have a phone meeting tomorrow with a consultant to try to speed things up so we'll see where that goes.
http://www.giantscalenews.com if anyone wants to check it out.
