I would like to change the default text in the forum search box which says "Search..." to "Search Forum..." to make it more clear what this is (and that it's just a search for the forum, not the whole site).  How do I do this?

I know you are working on a search plugin, so maybe there is a way to add a "custom messages" section to it so we can easily change descriptive text.  Also the ability to just keep it as a forum search would be great as well.  I use another search plugin for my main site and prefer to keep the blog and forum searches separate.

Looking forward to the new plugins!

look in your sp theme for most display elements... you can control how things appear... in this case, look in sp theme template file spHead.php (header appears on every page)... at the top, you will see a variable defined as $searchForm... you can customize the label and more as you want...

you can output text anywhere you want... just find the spot in the appropriate template file and use the php echo statement to output it...

you can also add text to the wp page the forum is on... that text will always appear above the forum... change as needed...
