If you share it from a forum post then it will link to the forum post. If you share it from a blog post then it will link to the blog post. Seems pretty basic and clear to me I am afraid,.
I can agree that I may have made this sound a lot more confusing than it needed to be, but the example I linked on here can't be more straightforward. I'm really not understanding how more clear I can be from that example.

Brandon, does your theme use visual composer? I have been able to do it with the text block but it is a separate block and doesn't integrate into a timeline which is what I and what I think is what you are looking for.

I believe so, an excerpt on the main page that links directly to a forum post instead of a blog post

No. Go to this site and scroll to where it says "BONE: Insider Report" you won't be able to read the contents because it goes straight to the message board where you must be a subscriber. At first look, one would think it's an article, but it's actually a forum post. It's not an excerpt, but a complete forum topic thread. Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier.

still sounds like you want some version of the template tags and widget plugin... which gives you multiple ways to display the latest stuff... and if you are using the sneak peek functionality, they will see the forum and topic, but wont be able to view the post... optionally, they can be blocked or directed to a page to sign up or other...
