Support Forum
Hey Derek,
The best way to deal with spam is to install the Admin Bar plugin. As the Codex page describes, adds Akismet support to help identify spam posts. It also gives you a nice interface at the top of the forum (visible only to admins) which allows you to deal with it quickly.
Also you can setup either a math question or a drag and drop captcha using the Captcha Plugin. These can both be setup to work on first posts, and even the registration page (assuming you are using the standard reg page) and should stop spam in it's tracks if it's a bot.
Hope this helps!
Well first up, of course it must always be remembered that there is no foolproof way to stop spam. Never has been. Probably never will be. So all you can hope to do is (a) minimise it and (b) catch it before it gets public.
One good start is to make it necessary for people to register and logon before they can post. This probably cuts out - in most cases - 99%+ of all spam as spammers really don't want the bother of doing this.
If you don't want to do that then using a captcha is the next best thing (and we have one available in our plugin library) as the posting of most spam is automated and will fail the captcha check.
if you don't want to do that then use our Admin Bar plugin. That allows you to check each new post as it comes in and also optionally will run each post through the Akismet service where you can set it up - if you feel brave - to automatically remove posts marked as spam - always remembering that it won't catch them all and WILL mark some incorrectly. Or - of course - manually delete them when checked which, using the admin bar plugin, is a quick and simple process.
