I am sorry to say it but the only plausible explanation is that these extra buttons and toolbars are coming from a plugin. I do not even know what a lot of them are except I do know they are not coming from either Simple:Press, WordPress OR TinyMCE - many of those buttons are not standard TinyMCE.

'Add to Cart' for example? That can ONLY come from a plugin or some third party source.

Remove those from the equation then we can perhaps see what is left.

It seems that I have not explained the issue well enough. There are two issues here. One is that there are those colored buttons on the last row. I know that they are coming from a plugin and I am dealing with the author of this plugin to resolve why they are showing up in the SP forum. So here the cause is clear and I am trying to work with the author to find a fix.

The second issue, and that is what I need help with, is that the buttons of the TinyMCE editor that I have configured on the WP admin side, show up in the SP forum, not only once, but most buttons show up two times. So for the sake of this thread we can disregard the colored buttons on the bottom row and just deal with the regular TinyMCE buttons.

Here is another screenshot where I show the duplicated buttons connected with colored lines. Those buttons are the same kinds of buttons which show up in your TinyMCE editor on this page of your forum. The only thing is that many of them show up twice instead of once.

Click here to view screenshot of the duplicated TinyMCE buttons

I have deactivated all the plugins, and that did not help. The buttons still show up twice.
I have switched to the default 2014 theme, and still the buttons show up twice. So it seems to me that I have eliminated both my plugins and my theme as possible culprits. What else could be causing this strange phenomenon?

Sorry but I really am not that dumb. I can see for myself what you have on the multiple toolbars because I looked at the screenshot. There is really no need to repeat the same information over and over.

So three further questions.

  1. You say you have deactivated all WordPress plugins. Does this include the plugin you know about that is responsible for at least some of those extra buttons - like the 'Add to Cart' and coloured buttons? I would like to see a screenshot of the toolbars when that plugin is deactivated.
  2. On the fourth toolbar down of your screenshot there is a button with an eye. What does the tooltip say when you hover over that button.
  3. On the fifth toolbar down there is a button with a smiley which is the tinyMCE emoticons button. WordPress does not expose that button by default in the TinyMCE editor and neither does SP. Have you turned that on in the editor set up options? And if not - what is causing it to display?

And finally please paste the content of the editor setup options from your forum admin so we can see what they are actually set to show.

Sorry, no offense was intended. Never thought you were dumb. In fact, just the opposite!

1. Yes, this plugin was deactivated. Here is a screenshot of the SP editor with the offending plugin deactivated:

2. The "Eye" button shows up as "Spoiler" when I hover over it. This button does not show up on the WP admin side. However it is listed in the SP TinyMCE toolbar options

3. The Emoticon button does show up in the WP admin editor. I don't recall activating it. I think WP made it a default option since I checked in another WP installation and it also shows up there.

Here is a screenshot of the SP TinyMCE toolbar options:

not trying to beat a dead horse, but is that image will all other plugins disabled?  and the wp default theme running?

is this a live site or test site that can be left in that state for testing?  can we get access to it as wp admin with sp admin caps?  but really need it in the sp only state...

not sure where Andy was going with the eye button question as that is our button...  the button list of what we add in your last image is as expected...

Let's focus on the Emoticons toolbar button. I am unaware of this being a default WP button just as I also know that WP only uses two toolbars by default.

@mr-papa  - have you seen the Emoticons button on any WordPress installs? I know I haven't.

Anyone?

And if I am right - as I believe I am - the question stands... what is putting it there?

@mr-papa : We posted at the same time.

I asked about the 'eye' because we use it as a spoiler but raw TM uses it as Preview.

I asked about the Emoticons because neither us or WP uses it.

There is only ONE instance of the eye button and that is clearly from the SP toolbar.

There is only one instance of the emoticons and my question remains - where is that coming from?

Mr. Papa, there is a screenshot of this site with the default 2014 theme in post #40.
This is not only a live site, but it is my main and only money site, it is a very active commerce site with the forum being one of the main ingredients. So I cannot leave the plugins deactivated for long or switch the theme for a long time since this could cost me quite a bit of money and grief from all my subscribers and customers.

My main traffic and most of my customers are in the US, so I get the least site access between midnight and 6 am EST.

I could give you admin access, but I really cannot have the site non-functional for more than a few minutes. Personally I have a program which allows me to do localhost testing of the site without affecting the live site. But this is not something which you could access online.

The other issue is that I found out that every time when I switch themes live, one plugin which displays part of my home page stops functioning and I have to do quite a bit of fiddling to get it to work again.

Yellow Swordfish, it seems that the emoticon button is now a default in the latest version of TinyMCE. If you go to the wordpress.org plugin download page for Tiny MCE, there is a screenshot which shows this button. Also I ran a test and installed TinyMCE on a site which did not have it before, and the emoticon button showed up by default.

I understand the screen with default theme... but its not also with all other wp plugins disabled...  really want to see what it looks like with only SP plugin running with default wp theme...

No, we dont want to affect the live site like that which is why I asked about a test mirror or deployment site where stuff is worked on before deploying to live site...  sounds like you can test the requested condition above locally though....

I just ran another test. So far I had disabled all plugins except SP and TinyMCE Advanced. Now I disabled the TinyMCE Advanced plugin in the WP admin and that made the duplicated buttons in SP disappear. Here is the screenshot with TinyMCE in WP admin disabled, but TinyMCE in SP still enabled.

http://screencast.com/t/yyCdQT804zgz

So apparently the latest version of the TinyMCE Advanced plugin itself is the cause of the duplicated buttons. Where do we go from here?
