So a superior (and fellow Moderator) has requested that links to directly approve/delete a given post appear in the new post notification email.
To me this sounds insurmountable as a novice (at best) web developer/designer.
What about a link to an adjudication page where a mod could make their decision?

Well first up 'approving' a post is pretty straightforward. This can actually be done with a query variable in the url. Just use the admin bar plugin to 'approve and go to topic' to see how this is done. But - it WILL load the topic as well so that is probably pointless.
Deleting is a different ball game altogether. if there was a url that could be invoked to delete a post then anyone could do it! Any user or malicious visitor could find it and use it to remove posts. Is that really desirable? But it could be done.
And finally the admin notification email can be easily changed via WP style filters. So all CAN be done. But I think you should challenge whether such a thing is really a good idea first...
