Put a new install in a sub domain, am finally going to SSL and found my main site works fine with https.  But I get an error in the sub domain forum and my webhost just wrote:

"That would indicate that the forum has rewrite rules that prevent the cPanel certificate from automatically issuing. I would advise using let's encrypt to find what the issue is so you can work to resolve it."

Is he right, I need to go to Let's encrypt?

thats not really a question for us?  the forum is fully ssl compatible as you can see here...

ssl certificates are by domain...  so if you put one on xx.com, it will be ssl... but any subdomains, such as something.xx.com will need its own certificate... based on what you wrote, I assume you have the forum on its own wp install on a subdomain from the main site...

or, you can get a wildcard certificate (costs significantly more than single domain certificate) that will work on the primary domain as well as the subdomains...

sounds like your host is suggesting using Let's Encrypt to secure cheap/free certificates... I dont know if they do wildcard certificates or not...

With autossl I have to do NOTHING, don't have to buy a certificate, install a certificate or anything -- it just works:

https://highdesertdirt.com/  -- added the "s" and changed NOTHING else.

So are you saying I have to buy a certificate?

I just thought that maybe SP wasn't playing nice, but maybe it's because it's in a subdomain.  May have to move to a different URL instead of the subdomain?  I've been working on this forum for literally YEARS now, always something.

https://highdesertfood.org/ -- just remembered that site and it works, so it must be because it's in a subdomain.

Forgot to mention in my first post that my host has autossl -- this has to be the coolest thing ever, totally free and couldn't be any easier, but too bad it doesn't work for subdomains.

what is autossl???  is that a wp plugin?  if so, did you install it on the subdomain wp as well?

do you have any other pages or posts in the subdomain wp that you could check?

if this autoss is some host thing, then perhaps you just need to update the subdomain wp...  do that by going to the wp settings and make sure the wp url and blog url have https in it...  then go to forum - integration - page and permalink and try updating the forum permalink to pick up the wp schema changes...

Here's some info on autossl, a cpanel thing:

https://blog.mddhosting.com/20.....-free-ssl/

There's nothing else on the subdomain, created it just for SP so I wouldn't have any interference from other plugins.

I'm sure that the issue is with the subdomain, SP works fine with SSL at https://highdesertfood.org/ without ANY changes at all when not in a subdomain.  I do realize that the links to the individual topics are not SSL, think I need to put some code in the autoexec or in the SP setup as you suggested.    But it does load ok.

well, you do have wp there, right?  simple-press does require it...

did you try the steps I suggested??

I didn't try any of those steps (14-hr days), but went back to MDD about the subdomain:

I have requested a re-scan of your hosting account, the expired SSL will be replaced within the next 24 hours.

Works now!

I think it's fantastic that any idiot (like me!) can now have SSL automatically and totally free, as long as the host does the auto ssl thing.

Is your host using cloudflare? I'm running my sites under their free ssl and have generated a free wildcard origin certificate to install into cpanel. Allows full ssl operation, and avoiding the troublesome flexible ssl that wreaks havoc with redirect loop errors in WordPress.

I really don't know how they're set up, have a reseller account at https://www.mddhosting.com/ (don't resell, just for my accounts)  I did NOT have to get a certificate or install anything.

This afternoon I managed to update my htaccess to redirect to ssl in my main domain, the food forum and the subdomain with my new forum.  I read all sorts of instructions on changing the URL at SP and WP settings, which I could not figure out how to do (multisite, probably in different places.)

I had the "error" with the warning on the lock for secure because of mixed content.   So I installed the plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/.....fixer/   Had to set it to "Capture" at my main site to get the GREEN lock!

Haven't done much testing yet, but so far it's looking good and I'll secure all my sites.  So easy if you know how 🙂

UDPATE:  To change the permalink in the subdomain SP forum I changed the URL in the WP install and the SP permalink subsequently updated itself.    I don't think there is a way to change the URL in the forum admin / integration directly.

At my main blog (multisite) I was unable to change the permalink, there's info on how to do it, but it seems like between the htaccess and the plugin it's working ok.
