Avatars on Mac

Hi,

I'm seeing a strange issue where uploaded Avatars don't display anywhere else on the site (e.g. blog comments) when viewing via any Mac OS browser (Chrome, FF, Safari) or mobile device.

But, they do display properly when viewing with any Windows-based browser... :/

Any ideas?

Hey William,

As nothing controls what is displayed depending on what browser or operating system is used it leads me to think it may be a caching plugin. If you're caching your WordPress site with a plugin you need to make sure the forum page is completely excluded, as it displays dynamically caching will cause it to display and behave erratically.

If this is the case, after putting an exception in place for the forum page in the settings of whatever caching plugin it may be, you might also need to clear the plugins temporary files (cached data) and your browser cache to see the effects.

Thanks for the replies!

Looks like this is a "Retina" issue... using FF developer tools and removing the avatar 'srcset' on the live blog page will allow the avatar to display.

The srcset is referencing Gravatar:

srcset='http://1.gravatar.com/avatar/4.....38;amp;r=r 2x'

I've never really looked into the image resizing stuff, so I'll dig in today.

In any case, if you're interested, the site is chisoxnation.com the issue can be seen (on a Mac) in the 2 test comments on this page.

so seems like you have something adding the srcset attribute then?  and confused as I dont see a srcset on the page you linked to? at least not on PC (have to wait for @yellow-swordfish to take a look with mac)...

but either way, simple press does not use or add the srcset attribute... do you have plugin that could be doing this?

also, you obviously are not looking at the forum so in your simple press options are you telling us to replace all wp avatars with simple press avatars?

I think you must have turned it off as I am seeing the avatars using Chrome on OSX. I assume that whatever was responsible was trying to force load 'x2' files and not checking of they existed. So suspect it wasn't JetPack.

Thank you both!

Yep - I turned it off (I just hacked pluggable.php to not add x2 file links) - I'm not sure where they were being created, but I'm fine with 'non-Retina' avatars 🙂
