Blog Linking gives forum subject as "topic-4175"

hi

This might be a simple setting issue but I can't see any settings for title, plus I doubt that this would be the default. Basically I checked 'Create forum topic' and while the post turned up ok in the forum, it had the title topic-4175 rather than the one the posit within my WP site has.

I should say that this was an existing post, I updated it (not the title!) and checked the box.

I - I assume - have the added problem of not being able to change the forum title or delete the topic (certainly can't find any option to do so).

Apologies if this is explained somewhere, can't find any support topics (it is a hard one to match I suppose) and no real talk about titles or subjects in the codex or documentation.

Thanks

S

You can change the topic title and the slug of a topic using the Forum Tools (see http://codex.simple-press.com/.....her-tools/ in the Code for information).

What is puzzling is why this slug. The word 'Topic' followed by the topic ID is a fallback in case the call to create the slug fails for any reason. So the question is - why should it fail?

Can you go to the forum admin > Toolbox > Error Log and see if there are any entries specifically to do with blog linking and slug creation. Any functions names should show this.

ta for the codex link, will check that out. The error log doesn't help unfortunately as I reckon it's full - I have maybe 50 occurrences of the below error, half at 4.04 and the others at 4.12 (I think I did the forum post much earlier)

file: /simple-press/sp-api/sp-api-auths.php
line: 32
function: sp_get_auth
Notice | Trying to get property of non-object

Just had a look at the codex, I am not getting the toolbox opening when I hover over the speech balloon icon (just the 'Browse the thread 4175' hover tip box.) I assume this means in regular forum view? (i.e. http://www.jockrock.org/forums.....iscussion/)
I'm logged in as myself, as I was when I posted, and that's full admin. Am I missing something?

On the error log front. The most recent is always at the top and it only stores the last 50 entries. That is a 'Notice' not an an error and is more of a nuisance than anything. But - you should not be seeing it. What version of SP is this please (and what version, for the record, of the Blog Linking plugin?)

So if you just hover the mouse anywhere in the row you do not see a small tool icon appear top left of the row? If you do not then that usually suggests a javascript confict of some kind and if that was the case I would expect there to be other things that do not work correctly. Have you found anything else wrong?

oh, a thought - the profile tabs in the forum (options, permissions, usergroups, subscriptions) don't act as I expect - instead it's a new page (same window) with pure unstyled text and the odd radio button. Like something (Java, Ajax, I dunno) doesn't kick in. But I'm sure everything's good for all other websites. Could be significant? (I'll maybe fill this in as a separate issue later...)

Edit: 5.2.2 and 1.1.2 - everything else works fine.

Is it possible that (with the call being to an 'auth' function) that it's someone trying to login? Or a crawler involing something? Had a lot of brute force attacks on the site as a whole and 6 guests on a forum that's not actually getting any views of topics.

you are now the second person that gets notices on that line...  we can get rid of the notice, but that just covers something up... would like to understand when and how that notice is occurring... can you make it happen?  and provide that feedback?

some of this could be due to your cloudflare usage... I am getting lots of warnings from it...

additionally, every forum page load is spitting a bunch stuff back out on our ajax requests:

any idea what that is??   appears it might be corrupting our ajax stuff...

I've really got no idea - I thought at least one of the timings was when I was out of the house! I'll have a look and see if I can relate it to anything. Current log has some from 5 minutes ago, thought it might have been me logging in, but there are also the same 20 or so errors/warnings from an hour ago when I know for a fact the Mac was asleep and I was sitting eating cheese. So... could be anything invoking it, from any user loading a page to a bot landing on something.

The OpenX stuff as you probably know controls the banner ads (tradedoubler for HMV etc). Could try turning that off and seeing if the Ajax stuff ( I assume this controls the popup tools) works.

I thought Cloudflare was maybe off! I turned it off for some of my sites, it is nothing but trouble as I'm sure you have spotted!

I do see something from Cloudflare being loaded although not sure what...
Do you know how this OpenX banner script is being loaded? From what Steve said I get the impression it is being force fed to each and every page load no matter what or how the request is made - which is somewhat heavy handed and undesirable...

rats, I thought this could be the answer, but...

First, turned off Cloudflare. No difference.

Then, removed the OpenX script that was in the header.php for the overall site. Again, nothing doing. The Toolbox refuses to pop up, and the Profile tabs lead to text-only pages. (Is there any way to access the Toolbox or somehow edit or delete a post without it?)

I have realised that my other forum - I really just set it up as a test - is working fine! It has Cloudflare 'on', though no OpenX loading. http://www.isthismusic.com/forum

Is there anything else showing up with your debugging tools? There are plenty of plugins and whatnot and I suppose any one of them could conflict if it is SP Ajax (the other site has some common stuff, but clearly there must be a difference somewhere...)

Edit: have tried disabling all plugins apart from S:P, and still the same I'm afraid. So something else must be conflicting (any way of telling if Ajax or java is working correctly apart from this stuff?)

It occurs to me that I have THREE separate issues in the same thread! (the odd debug messages which I'm less bothered about, the Ajax or whatever that's preventing the Toolbox and Profiles working, and the Topic 4175 problem, the most bothersome)

I was pretty sure that it could have been my posting an edit to the forum that game the odd number, but I just tried a brand new post, copied through to the forum, and it has been given title "topic-4176". Which apart from anything else, is preventing me from setting the forum live and doing some proper user testing on everything else.

It's like it's taking the title from the Permalinks (apart from the bad maths). Where does it come from? (I use custom permalinks, /%category%/%postname%/)

4176, by the way, is 11 more than the 4165 posts in the forum (probably some database drop-out... it was converted from a phpbb board originally)
