I am getting a stack of three boxes with one zero in each above my photo. Any ideas why that is?

I would suggest that you have probably updated the Simple:Press core to 5.3.1 but have not updated the Simple:Press plugins you are using...

All plugins are updated, or at least I think so, so I don't have any notice in the admin side of WP of any updates being needed except for a non-related podcast plugin that I have not updated yet.

what version did you update from?  and running your own sp theme?

have you applied the admin bar css changes to it from here:  http://codex.simple-press.com/.....tes-5-3-0/

its the admin bar changes in spHead...
