Can only view own topics - is this possible?

Hi again, I'm on a roll today with 2 questions 🙂

I would like to create a private forum where users can only see and reply to the topics they create. The admin would be able to see all of them reply to each one.

If it's possible, I can't seem to find the right combination of checks in checkboxes on the permissions page.

It's as if I need a checkbox offering something like:

Can view only own topics and admin/mod topics

or

Can view a list of forums and list of OWN topics only

Is this possible with a combination of existing settings?

Many thanks

I must start out by saying it is a setup I have not tried myself but I would hope that the 'viewing' permission 'Can view only own posts and admin/mod posts' would sort what is shown leaving the 'creating' permissions to take care of the rest. Have you tried this?

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried that but I think what I need is the same thing but for topics as well as posts.

With the setting you suggested, it still shows the topics started by other users in the main forum topic list view. I only want users to see topics they've started.

Also when clicking on a topic started by another user, it shows an empty placeholder for each post/reply as if it's hiding only the content area, rather than the entire post/reply.

Here's an example viewing a topic started by a different user to who is viewing it:

And here's what it looks like to the user who wrote the post:

Cheers

mmm. Leaves me in doubt on whether we can support this as things stand. @mr-papa - any ideas?

well, its only blank because you have chosen to leave the displayed message as blank... 😉  actually, more than likely, you were not aware that you could optionally display a message there rather than a blank message...  see forum - components - custom messages where you can configure a message there...

the design of that permission is to keep posts within a topic private except for between the admin and users...  often this is done in private forums (open support) where some posts are left viewable but perhaps key, critical user or admin data is hidden...  meant as a method to entice your users to join up...

We have a couple plugins that allow other private type actions... private posts, hide posters and post anonymously...  however, not sure they will really get you 100% there...

If you truly want private topics where they are completely hidden, afraid we dont currently have support for that...

Ah ok, I understand - thanks

I wasn't sure if it would have been standard functionality so just thought I'd check with you guys.

I'll continue with the Private Messaging plugin for what I'm doing.

Thanks again
