Hello,
One of my readers had the same problem. He wrote, that javascript doesn't work, because it calls a function, which doesn't exist. Then the "Add topic button" cannot work.
He added a drop down menu in "Appearance -> Menu". You can see the screen capture here. Then he created a menu without entry, and selected it. So the forum can work with his theme.

It is a solution, that one of my readers found to use SP with its own theme. So, more a hint than an issue
