I feel like this is a really dumb question... but I can't see how to moderate posts.
If I turn on the option for first posts to require moderation, then a new post has "awaiting moderation" displayed at the top of the post. If I log in as a regular user then I can't see the post that is awaiting moderation, as you'd expect. If I log in as an admin or moderator, then I can see the post with "awaiting moderation" above it, but can't see a button to approve the post? I assume I must be missing something obvious here?
Easiest thing is probably to check out this FAQ: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....her-tools/
But - you can also use the SP 'Admin Bar' plugin which might be of interest.

I have already installed the Admin Bar plugin and it isn't showing me anything useful - the count for posts awaiting moderation is 0, even though I definitely do have a comment still waiting moderation. When I try to click on the toolbox it isn't opening most of the time (it occasionally appears, but I can't see a pattern for this). Any suggestions as to what might be the problem here?
The Admin Bar plugin will not work on retrospective posts but once activated will work on future posts.
If the forum tools popup menu is not behaving this most usually suggests a javascript issue and a potential conflict with wither the WP theme or another WP plugin. If you now how to use your browsers script console it is easy to check this by opening the console, re-loading a page and then trying to open the tools popup. Any errors or problems will be shown in the console.
There is one other way of approving a post that is awaiting moderation. Go to the forum admin > Admins > Global Admin Options and make sure that the option to 'Approve all posts in topic in moderation when an admin posts to the topic' is turned on. Then simply reply to the post in question logged in as the SP admin.
