Hi,

I'm not sure when this happened, but now when I try to open any of my forums, they all return to the index. Here's my site: http://ddinteractive.co.uk/car.....sim/forum/

I'm not even sure where to start looking. Any suggestions?

Thanks

It really is the case that the first question always has to be - what has changed? And that doesn't mean within Simple:Press but within the site itself. I.e., new WP plugins or changed WP plugin options....

The two most common causes of this are (a) some sort of permalink redirection being put in place or (b) starting to use the Yoast WP SEO plugin. So are either of these the case? Perhaps also should ask if the .htaccess file has been changed for any reason.

Thanks for the reply. Now that you mention it perhaps the htaccess has changed. This was about a month back though. I had to restore my site from an earlier backup as I accidentally installed dopresskit over it.

If you went back to a backup that doesn't sound like a culprit but worth checking first. I am not an 'htaccess man' myself... it's all a bit obscure to me! But it should be easy to check.

The bottom line os that you can see the links in the forums are all correct so the correct urls are being presented to the server. But something is clearly interrupting that and removing everything after the WP 'page' slug. What about JetPack? Do you have that installed as that can cause all kind of problems...

Yes I do have jetpack installed. I'll remove it as I'm not using it & report back.

I tried Jetpack and it didn't make a difference. I did however find the issue. It's a plugin called '404 Redirected' I've had this installed since before I installed Simple:press so I wonder what's changed. I need to run it as I have some links in my published games that I changed the url to.

Thanks for your help.

I hate to be rude about JetPack as it comes from the WordPress stable but it really is a bit of a troublemaker as it turns so many options on by default without letting you know they are on. If people are not using it the best advice is always to be rid of it!

So - I am unfamiliar with 404 Redirected. Does this mean that for some reason the plugin thinks that an SP URL is going to lead to a 404? If this is the case then that sounds very weak and points to a  lack of understanding of how WP rewrite rules work.

Not sure why it would start bit I think I can safely say that the SP rewrite rules and url handling has not actually changed since way back before version 5.

Are you able to work round this in some way? Are there options enabling this plugin to ignore forum urls?

Worth noting that your 404 plugin has not been updated for 3+ years so it could be that your problem was caused by a core WordPress update that has changed something internally that your 404 plugin is no longer responding to correctly. Just a thought.

There seems to be an issue arising from an option to automatically redirect traffic. I've added the redirect I want, so I disabled the automatic redirect and it's working as expected again.

Not sure why it started playing up though. I'll keep my eye on it and eventually when I update my software I'll get rid of the redirects altogether.

thanks for your help.

Fixing it up is good news.
