That’s the exact wording. I copy-and-pasted it.

This is actually a WordPress message saying you do not have permission to use that menu item.
If you look down the actual WP menu on the left do you have a Forum item and are you allowed to use that?
I’m sorry for being dense but I ran the update (as I mentioned above), but when I click “update the Simple Press database” I get a message telling me I don’t have permission to access that page.
Then you asked if I had “Forum” on my lefthand menu and if I could access it. I said yes.
Apparently there’s something I should do from there to update the database.
So I went there again. And I ran the update again. And I get the exact same thing again.
Although I have run the update and gotten the message that “Simple Press has successfully updated” — on my updates page it is still showing SP5.5.2.
The ‘update’ that took place in the WP update dashboard updates the physical code files to the latest versions. The actual database also needs an update to bring it up to the correct version. This is carried out via the menu item.
I have to say I have never seen or heard of this message being seen by anyone before so it comes as a bit of a surprise – especially as I assume you have had access to the forum menu options before this.
So – we need to check your account status on WP.
Can you visit the WordPress admin > Users > Your Profile page? At the bottom you should see a section entitled – I believe – ‘Additional Capabilities’ and over on the right these will be shown assuming there are any. Can you tell me what is there – copy and paste it here perhaps?
Pasting that here:

That looks perfect,. Confirms you are still, as far as Simple:Press goes, a fully-fledged Simple:Press admin and, I assume, also a WordPress Administrator.
Which begs the question as to why WordPress (and it IS WordPress) will not let you access the forum menu options.
What about anything else that might have changed? While doing this site upgrade have you installed any new WP plugins? Or do you have one of the so-called Security plugins active that might be making a block? Anything else new or changed?
I have not installed anything new. All I upgraded was WP and SP. On Sunday I upgraded the SP Plugins and SP Themes but today I did not.
I have Sucuri security on my site.
However, I can access the Forum menu. Is there an option on the forum menu that I should be clicking?
Sorry but I really don’t understand. You can access the forum menu? But this IS the menu option you said you could not get access to? What am I missing please?
And why are you not upgrading the plugins please which are dependent upon 5.5.3 being available?
I’m not trying to be confusing. I did answer an earlier question about the forum menu by saying Yes, I could access it.
What I couldn’t do is update the SP Database. Since I couldn’t do that, I didn’t think I should continue with the rest of the plugin updates.
I just now went to the Plugins page and it is showing SP as not updated. Here’s what is showing there:

However, I have updated it (but have not been able to update the SP database through clicking the hyperlink after doing the update).
Should I still update the plugins?
I would ay update them but before you do that can you go to the forum admin > Toolbox. The first form should tell you the current version and build number. Can you let me know what they say please?
This is bizarre…
Are you able to and willing to look at your server folders to see what is installed and where?
Actually – as well – go to the WordPress plugin listing please. Are you only seeing the one entry for Simple:Press?
