I've replaced "userdefault.png" with my modified version, however when a user signs up as a member, it uses the old avatar (red/orange background) instead of my new one. Is there anyway to resolve this?

And I assume you have replaced this new version in the storage location? By default sp-resources/forum-avatars ?
If so then the old original will not be there any more and it would have to use the new one? So... are you sure this is not just a matter of the browser caching the old image and not yet refreshing to the new one? Try in a different browser perhaps.

Correct, I've done the same for the admin avatar which worked fine. I've tried clearing my cache and also trying in IE and Firefox and both appear the same. As soon as I create a new user, they're given the old avatar image. Is it cached anywhere within SP?

No - I can assure you it isn't. I also just tried the same thing here without any problem.
Give me a link to a page that has the 'user/member' icon on it so I can see what I am getting please

I've tried changing the guest avatar inĀ wp-content\sp-resources\forum-avatars just to make sure that it is looking in the right place. As soon as I changeĀ guestdefault.png, it picks it up and works fine. Still no luck with userdefault though.
