Hi, I was building my first child theme today and after some reloading of the page was able to see the changes made in the child theme (e.g. removing stats in footer). All works fine on my windows 7 laptop!

Then I open my Chromebook and surprise ... I can't see the child theme changes and actually in the source code of the page I don't see reference to the child theme (as I do on my Windows 7 laptop). So I reload the page at least 5 times and no solution. Do you know the probable cause?

Actually I noticed when I change the overlay it does not show up either on the Chromebook and is visible immediately on the Windows 7 laptop.  I guess some cache somewhere? However I reloaded at least 5 times!

SP version 5.5.6. Default (child) theme. minimalist overlay

Hey Sjoerd,

I guess the first thing to ask is are you running any caching plugins? Also have you tried clearing the cache in Chrome? I've had the problem before where Chrome loads the old page after changing overlay but never theme, clearing browser cache fixes that for me.

Zencache is not activated (however installed) because I had some doubts whether I should use it on a forum. I just cleared Zencache and uninstalled. Makes no difference. Cleared the cache of Chrome ... makes no difference. Is Simple:Press using cache? I noticed the 'flush general cache' button in Housekeeping ... however have not used it yet.

Leaving aside browser caching, the only way that Simple:Press can serve up a different theme is when using a different device type. There simply are no other possibilities. So the question is, does your Chromebook identify itself in any way other than a normal 'PC'?

Go to the forum admin > toolbox >< Data Inspector - turn on the inspector for 'spDevice' and run a forum page to see what gets reported back. If 'Desktop' then I agree with Ike that it has to come down, in some way, to caching. an no - we don't cache that kind of data.

Ah interesting. Yes the Chromebook presents itself as 'mobile' and I just checked with an old Windows Vista laptop that everything looks OK there (and the child theme is used). So now I have to learn a bit more about mobile devices and how I can adjust the layout for them.  Thanks so far!

Never mind, responsive Unified and Reboot themes work better.

> [There is only one problem remaining now: when I activate the child theme for mobile support and also for tablet support the Forum looks much better on these devices. On the Nexus 7 tablet the forum looks great just like on the pc. Only one issue left: the icons in the forum are not visible on the mobile platform. E.g. Chromebook and Motorola Moto G (android)].

Are your SP and parent theme versions the very latest? All updated?
I know we had a prior issue with child themes and icons but that should all be resolved.

The latest .. well your SP software is 5.5.6. Default theme is 1.2.15 version build 12749. Only when using the child theme I see this problem of not showing the icons. However Unified responsive is probably better in my Wordpress Responsive Pro theme (of Cyberchimps) and is working fine. Will work a bit further on the translation of the Unified theme the coming week.

I'm a bit confused, as you've only mentioned that Default theme is up to date, is your child theme a child of Default? The reason I ask is that if you're using the stock version of Reboot and are having an Icon problem we should look into that.

If your child theme is a child of Reboot, it handles icons slightly differently as you specify the icon pack at the top of the overlay, and any specific mobile icons if not generic are inside those packs. Also worth asking what icons were missing?

All the same glad you have a set up that's working for you.

Yes the Default child theme (I created yesterday) has this problem on Mobile. The Unified child theme I am using now does not have this issue on Mobile. I only switched to Unified to try if it worked better and it did.
