Clarifying Translations Process

Hi,

I'm trying to translate to fr_FR French (France).

For a couple of plugins, I did it the manual way...downloaded the translations from http://glotpress.simple-press......m/projects, completed any missing rows, created the .mo and uploaded via cpanel.

Then I spotted Forum > Integration > Language Translation settings and used this to automatically create the .mo for all core, theme and plugins.

However, I've still got some English scattered about with some elements partially translated.

Can you tell me, does the automatic method via the Language Translation page add the latest .mo as shown on your translation site? And does it leave rows blank in the .mo that do not show as green/current.

In which case, perhaps I should just stick to the manual method for all not fully complete translations?

I also cannot for the life of me find where I need to translate parts of the user profile pages. Some are appearing in French, other parts are not e.g. all the buttons in a user's profile, and the title and some of the descriptions for each section of the profile.

Also the File Uploader plugin as an example: http://glotpress.simple-press......fr/default

I don't think this includes the button text 'View Existing Image Uploads', 'View Existing Media Uploads' and so on. Where do they appear?

Thanks

I will number these just for clarity...

  1. The download of translation files in the forum admin > Integration will just download the current state of MO files regardless of whether the translations are complete or not. We can not, of course, automatically add translations! So we can only download what has been completed. Untranslated strungs of text are simple ignored.
  2. Profiles are an odd one. Because we felt people might want a more customised text in the profile tabs and menus you will find the text for these in the forum admin > Profiles > Tabs and Menus - where you can change the text labels to your preference and language of choice.
  3. The 'Existing Uploaded' items text that you refer to is not a part of the File Uploader plugin but a part of the Uploads Viewer plugin - a separate entity. You should find the text you are looking for in that PO file.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does, thanks. What you say seemed completely logical. It just didn't seem to fit until you explained where those profile and file upload translations were hiding. All the best, Stefan

I've got two translations I cannot source the .po files for:

With the post thanks plugin activated, there's a button that shows 'Thank' or 'Thanked' once you've pressed it, and hover over is 'say thanks for this post'. I cannot find this text in the post thanks .po.

Also, the button that says 'upload attachment' which causes the special uploader dialogue box to appear when using the file uploader plugin. I cannot track that bit of text down either.

Thanks

The display items like 'thanked' should be in your SP theme PO file. Have you looked there?

Does the other one really say 'upload attachment’? I don't see that term anywhere. Can you confirm the actual text and where it is seen?

Here's a screencast of the upload attachments text: http://screencast.com/t/uNHzilUR

The thanks related text does appear in green as translated in the default theme .po you suggested other than this phrase 'say thanks for this post'.

As the text that is present has been translated in the .po I'm not sure why this isn't showing up in French on the site. The rest of the theme is fine.

Still cannot track down that 'say thanks for this post' though. Could I just change the text where it appears in spTopicView.php here:

sp_thanks_thank_the_post('tagClass=spButton spRight', 'Thank', 'Thanked', 'Say thanks for this post', 'You have already thanked this post');

Or is that bad practice?

Cheers

You can change the template's, but it's really more of a quick fix in this case. If you do however decide you want to change the wording, be sure to make a child theme so you don't loose your change(s) when updating.

Are we talking about this?

It's a bit strange, I can see it in GlotPress, I can see it in the plupload code, but I can't find it used anywhere.

Are you all up to date with SP and plugins?

Hi Ike, thanks for locating the uploads text in glotpress. On a whim I uploaded the .mo again, just like before, and the translation has come through. By the way, when you said you cannot find it used anywhere, did you see my screencast? Anyway don't know why it didn't work before, but it's working now.

For the thanks text, I've changed the template in my child theme. Still confused why it's not been translated like all the rest but there you go.

Thanks again

No problem,

I did see your screenshot but I can't find it used in any of my local themes which is why I wondered if maybe it was from an old version. As you can see here underneath the editor it simply says "Attachments".

Maybe someone else can clear up exactly where it comes from..
