Hi - Is it possible to close a particular forum / group to new topics and replies, but maintain the viewing access for current permission sets?

Absolutely, It is just a matter of how you set the permissions. Perhaps you need to change them to a new set defined for viewing only (like our default 'read-only' set) or perhaps need to create a new one for the purpose and then go to change the permission set used on the manage groups and forums admin panels.
