Really, how hard can it be?

I've had gconvert to do the job for us, they have now spent 7 days, and are still not able to do things right.

Anyone care to give me their opinion?

Is the converter found here: https://simple-press.com/download/ is this something that works without having great programming skills?

Could I do the job myself, instead of waiting for someone who isn't as professional as I first thought?

yes, point and click importer from phpbb...  now, it wont import everything...  brings across users, groups, forums, topics and posts...  give it a shot and see if you like the results - only takes a couple minutes to run...  do it on test install or just revert the wp site back with db backup after trying...

but actually, we have heard some good things about gconvert... usually for imports that our importer doesnt support or if there is other explicit things wanted that our importer doesnt grab...

Too bad I didn't try that first.

I was so certain that these people could do the job, but they are messing up things, and suddenly they rolled back my WP database back to where it was a couple of days ago, so my own WP-posts, some of my users-wp-posts and images + some WP-settings are now gone. It should not have anything to do with the forum convertion...

They told me to let phpbb3 stay untouched, but they did not mention that I should put my whole site down..

It really ***** me off!

Sorry guys, not your fault - just needed a place to cry it all out..

wow, does sound like bad experience...  if a site needs to go down for the conversion, that is fine, but should be for short period of time where nothing can be added...  rolling back sucks...

How do I install the importer (Aha - PLUGIN!) :) , and is the only thing missing from the importer the "PM's" and the attachments?

since not a user of phpbb, cannot be exact, but yes think thats it - attachments, pms...  oh and avatars...

yes, its a standard wp plugin... will add new forum admin menu for the importer...

It doesn't look like the conversion tool works on large amounts of data.

I have about 170.000 forum posts, and 4500 users.

The users where OK, but it failed on something like 500 internal server error after the first forum.

Too bad. :( I guess I can only hope that gconvert can do it then...

we have run it on larger datasets than that... what was the error? did you look in the server error logs? maybe you were just running out of memory... did you try the utf-8 option?
