When signed in as contributor (possible other roles too) the unread posts do not show up in dashboard widget? See attachment.
Do you have a fix for this?

There is nothing to fix! By default this is only available to SP Admins.
It is, however, something we could certainly consider opening up for other user roles.

I'd then recommend removing this dashboard widget for all other non 'admin' users. If it's not valid for any other role then it just takes up extra space and added confusion for all other user roles in the system.

Actually I stand corrected. It IS available to anyone who can access the dashboard. And I misread your first post as meaning the whole widget did not show up.
the difference between an admin and a non-admin is that an admin will have posts in the postbag that require moderation regardless of whether they have been read by an admin. a non-SP admin user will not see these. And if nothing shows up that would normally suggest that they have no unread posts in their own new post list as the list is personalised.
