Actually yes, these are all users that I had already created on the site as they are moderators, and they have then added a new registration - obviously just trying out the process to see how it works. They are all ones that can be deleted as there is no need for them to have two user accounts, however if that was not the case is there any way that I would be able to amend the display name, i.e. in the unlikely instance that two people had the same name?
hah! I didn't think of that. Because you do not allow people to create their own Display Name!
Now - I think there might be a good case to suggest that an Admin should still be able to change it so I will open that up for discussion here...
I will have to check but I might be able to offer you the code fix for the original number issue but you would have to edit the code manually if it is possible. Although we are still in the testing phase for this of course.

I am still having issues over user display name.
I thought I had resolved this but it seems not. I recently created a second profile for myself because I wanted to test out what different ranks of users would see on the forum as I was playing with permissions. Initially it showed two users both with the same display name, but I note today that my Admin user name now appears with the random number after it that we discussed. I am a little concerned that it is this display name that has been affected - surely as that one was created first it should stay the same and any users created later should be the one to be affected? Also, because I have no intention of keeping the second user profile as this was just for test purposes, my main admin Display name is now left with the random number and I have no way of removing it.
The second problem with user display names is that, although I have it set to default to First Name, Second Initial I have to keep going back to the forum settings and resetting this option to force it to happen - it is not happening automatically whenever a new user registers. Surely, if it is a DEFAULT, the display name should DEFAULT to that automatically? Furthermore, when I do this, although it will change the display name in the members list, at the bottom of the forum where members are listed, the display name stays the same as it was before I updated the settings.
as to first, not sure how one would do that... there is not timestamp on the display name... wp does not record that kind of info either or any history on the changing of the display name...
also, what triggered the names changes? user 2 changing his display name will not affect user 1 display name... it doesnt happen... but if you updated the settings in the admin panel such that we had to cycle through all the users and update, then its a crap shoot (think its by user id) which one occurs first... again, wp does not record any name change history or timestamp the change...
I dont know why you cannot change the admin name display... if you change the other user to something else, then the original one will be available again... if you have made name changing disabled, then yeah, but you could turn it back on for fleeting second and do it... In the next SP 5.3 version, we have made it such that admins can still change display names when changing is disabled - its their forum...
the stats at the bottom are cached... so name changes take your stats update time to change... or are you just saying the stats name display format does not follow the setting vice the actual data changing? if latter, would have to check and see if we even look at that for stats...

did a little testing this morning... new users are getting created in the new name format properly for me... now, per this thread, we have some changes in this area but not sure around this...
one thing to note, the default (as the text and help in the admin panel say) is only applicable if you are not allowing users to set a display name... if you are allowing users to pick their display name, the default is not applicable and will be whatever wp sets the initial display name to...
also on the stats, if you change the display format, the existing names in the stats are not updated to the new format... but any new users added do follow the format... I can open a ticket about updating the existing users in the recent members list on a name format change...

I have now deleted my second user account and managed to change my display name on the admin account by doing what you suggested and enabling display name changing and then disabling it again after I had changed mine, but again it does not change it in the stats, so if you are able to do anything about that it would be helpful
as previously stated, a correct for name display changes to be reflected in the stats has been incorporated into the next version of SP...
