Several days back I was invited to "upgrade" my Simple:Press plugin, which is easy to do in WP. By going to the Plugin menus, I simply click on Update the Simple:Press plugin.

Then I went to one of my multiple forums and I was suprised to find out that, although at first glance the forum look like before, upon mousing over a topic, the entire page dissappeared.

I went back to my web hosting provider and asked them to restore the website to what it was days before the "upgrade" of simple:Press, at least that way I could stick with what I have, without the upgrade.

Unfortunately, now I have another error. Instead of the forum page with all topics, what I see is a message:

"Sorry, the forum is temporarily unavailable while it is being upgraded to a new version".

I interpret this as saying that I must upgrade the plug in, no matter what.

So I attempted the upgrade a second time, after doing my own backup. Which I did, and once again I went back to the dissapearing forum.

Once more I restore my backup and go the exact same message as before. "Sorry, the forum is temporarily unavailable while it is being upgraded to a new version".

I contacted Simple:Press technical support and I was told that I needed to "upgrade the database" as well, but I have no knowledge of what that means or how to do it.

When I inquired for more details, I was referred to the Codex installation page, but that does not explain how to "upgrade the database", although it does suggest to backup the database before upgrading the plugin (which I thought I did).

At this point, I have run out of options or solutions with my knowledge. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Upgrading your installation of SP is done from the forum menu where it asks you to upgrade. This makes any necessary changes to the database. In 5.,5.4 there were some very minor changes.

So are you saying that the whole page disappears when you hover over an element on the page?

is everything now up to date? is this a custom theme or one of our standards? And can we have a link to your forum page?

Hi Swordfish.

Currently I am in the restored backup, before I attempted the upgrade, so the page is not disappearing currently.

The WP version is 4.1 running Subway Child theme.

The plugin menu shows Simple:Press Version 5.5.3 with the Upgrade/Deactivate/Edit options.

The dissappearing forum bug only occurs If I use the WP menu to upgrade Simple:Press. Currently I just get the "Sorry..." message.

After the upgrade, I noticed that the heading of the page (including menus, logo and headings of the website) stayed, all forum content (topics, etc) dissapeared.

Thanks for the help.

so you are either going to have to roll back your db to backup and load an equivalent simple press on your server...  or do the upgrade and then lets solve whatever other issue you are having...

after the upgrade and missing forum, any errors in the php error log?  did you also update any available simple press plugins and themes?  there are dependencies...

Currently, I restored my website to backup (before any upgrade was attempted).

What is this "db" (database?), I do not know how to update or roll back (if that is what I need to do).

Perhaps it would be wise to make the website work again before any upgrades, since the pre-upgrade was working fine for me. What would there be an error now that was not present before the backup. ?

I don't know how to get the php error log.

if you rolled to a backup, then you must also upload a corresponding version of simple press...  the core code and db must match...

so you will have to know what version of simple press the db has in it (you restored it, not us)....  you can also look in the wp_sfoptions table for a option name of sfversion...  then get the same version from here:  https://simple-press.com/docum.....-versions/

then you will be back where you were...  you may not be able to update any sp themes or plugins as they may require the latest version...

personally, I think this is the wrong way to go...   should not be hard to figure out what is going on...  I would leave 5.5.4 on the server and run the upgrade... then solve the problem...

but its your site - your call...

Ok. Suppose I upgrade to 5.5.4, do I need to also upgrade the "db", who do I do that?

It looks like I have version 5.5, ready to be upgraded to version 5.5. Here is what is displayed in my WP page:

Upgrade Simple:Press From Version 5.5 to 5.5.3

Andy explained how to do that back in post #2...

so after you do that, come on back and tell us what is going on...  and can you access admin?  just missing front end?  maybe go to forum - integration - page and permalink and try the display settings there...

after you upgrade, make sure you go to wp - dashboard - updates and also update any simple press plugins and themes that have updates available...
