Is there a way to get rid of the "forum" in the links?

there is not really way to do what you want... remember, simple press is a plugin for wp and all the forum content appears on a single wp page... in this case, the page you have named forum...
There is nothing that keeps you from changing the page name from forum to something else, but the forum needs a wp page on which to display our stuff...
There is one special situation supported where the group view (ie the wp page) can be omitted but that is only if you have a single forum... in your case, you have multiple so it doesnt apply...

understand in your situation where you have done a custom url redirect to put the forum in a subdomain, its kind of repetitive...

Don't forget - if you change the page name it is the page slug that is used by WP in the url. And after any change you will also need to visit the forum admin > integration > page and permalink - and update the forum permalinks.
